Tipping Your Wedding Photographer

Also called: photographer gratuity, wedding vendor tips

Definition

Tipping your wedding photographer is an optional thank-you on top of the contract price. Etiquette guides don't treat tips as expected, and the common range is $50 to $200 per team member or 5 to 15% of the contract.

Do You Tip a Wedding Photographer?

You don't have to. Wedding etiquette guides treat a photographer tip as optional. The Knot puts the common range at $50 to $200 per team member, or 5 to 15% of the photography contract, given at the end of the reception.

Associates are different. When a studio sends a photographer who doesn't own the business, or you book a second shooter, a tip goes straight to the person who worked your day.

Short answer: Tipping your wedding photographer is optional. If you'd like to, $50 to $300 per photographer at the end of the night is the common range, and a detailed review is a thank-you every photographer values.

Thank-Yous Beyond Cash

For a small studio, a written review carries a lot of weight. A detailed review on Google names your venue, your date, and how the day felt, and future couples read reviews like yours before they book. Tagging your photographer when you share photos helps the same way.

Feeding your photographer counts too. A vendor meal during dinner keeps your photographer sharp for the toasts and the dance floor.

How I Handle Tips

I am always appreciative, but never expectant. I price my services accurately for the work I do and never rely on tips for additional income. That being said, if you appreciated my hard work and felt I went above and beyond, a tip is always welcome.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tipping Your Wedding Photographer

No. Etiquette guides treat photographer tips as optional, and a thank-you note or a detailed review is a welcome alternative.

The common range is $50 to $300 per photographer, or 5 to 15% of the contract. Give the tip at the end of the reception, in an envelope with a note.

A tip for a second shooter or assistant follows the same range. Hand the tip to them directly, or put one envelope with a note asking the lead photographer to share.

At the end of the reception is typical. Handing the envelope to a planner or a family member to deliver keeps the task off your mind on the night itself.
